The Vanderburgh County Board of Health met in special session to discuss the Novel H1N1 Influenza virus. This urgent public health bulletin is issued as a result of this session.

Until recently Southwestern Indiana has been relatively free of the H1N1 influenza virus. We now have laboratory confirmed cases and are receiving reports of a large number of patients that meet the definition of Influenza Like Illness (ILI), also known as flu like symptoms.

State Economies Going From Bad to Worse

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. states' economies are moving from bad to worse, and their governments' fiscal stress "has accelerated," a report by an independent federal government watchdog found Monday.

"Absent any intervention or policy changes, state and local governments would face an increasing gap between receipts and expenditures in the coming years," the Government Accountability Office wrote in the report.

"Any combination of state and local government revenue increases or spending cuts to address the operating deficit is complicated by the current recession," it said.

Recession Claims More Jobs

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - An unexpected improvement in U.S. home sales provided a rare dose of good economic news on Monday, but companies continued to wield the axe on jobs as the year-long recession inflicted more pain.

The pace of sales of previously owned homes rose for the first time since September and inventory declined, a bit of positive news amid a U.S. housing market crash that has chilled growth, sent unemployment soaring and sharply eroded household wealth.

Health info technology saves lives, costs: study

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Hospitals in Texas that used computers to keep track of patient records and manage care had lower rates of deaths, complications and costs, U.S. researchers said on Monday, offering a strong argument for hospitals to go "paperless."

They said patients treated in hospitals that ranked highest in use of health information technology to manage patient records and physician notes were 15 percent less likely to die compared with patients in hospitals that ranked lower.

Obama Lifts Ban on Abortion Funding

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama Friday lifted restrictions on U.S. government funding for groups that provide abortion services or counseling abroad, reversing a policy of his Republican predecessor George W. Bush, a spokesman said.

The Democratic president's decision was a victory for advocates of abortion rights on an issue that in recent years has become a tit-for-tat policy change each time the White House shifts from one party to the other.

Republican Leadership Looking to Cooperate on Stimulus

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Congress's most powerful Republican Friday backed President Barack Obama's call to set aside political differences and cooperate on efforts to revitalize the economy and resolve other issues.

Yet only time will tell if such rhetoric by Obama and Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell produces results -- or deteriorates into more of the partisan bickering that has long marked Washington politics.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama Wednesday plunged into Israeli-Palestinian peace diplomacy on his first full day in office and looked poised to order the closing of the internationally condemned military detention camp at Guantanamo.

Acting swiftly on Day One after his inauguration, Obama also summoned his economic team and war council to press ahead with plans for rescuing the battered economy and ending the unpopular war in Iraq.

Clinton Confirmed as Secretary of State

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Hillary Clinton won U.S. Senate approval as secretary of state Wednesday despite renewed Republican concerns about potential conflicts of interest created by her husband's foreign fundraising.

The Senate easily approved Clinton's nomination by President Barack Obama to be the top U.S. diplomat. She replaces former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

The final Senate vote was 94-2.

Bush Defends Record in Farewell Address

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush Thursday defended his actions to avert a collapse of the financial system and protect America from another terrorist attack as he mounted a farewell bid to polish his troubled legacy.

Five days before handing over the presidency to Barack Obama, Bush delivered a televised final address to the American people in which he sought to define a White House record that some historians are already ranking among the worst ever.

Obama Urges "Dramatic Action" On Economy

Taking his economic pitch on the road Friday, President-elect Barack Obama promoted his plans to create long-lasting, well-paying jobs in cutting-edge industries like alternative energy as part of his mammoth plan to pull the country out of recession.

"It's not too late to change course - but only if we take dramatic action as soon as possible," the president-elect said as he sought an early victory on his stimulus program. He pledged: "The first job of my administration is to put people back to work and get our economy moving again."
