H1N1 Safety Guidelines

The Vanderburgh County Board of Health met in special session to discuss the Novel H1N1 Influenza virus. This urgent public health bulletin is issued as a result of this session.

Until recently Southwestern Indiana has been relatively free of the H1N1 influenza virus. We now have laboratory confirmed cases and are receiving reports of a large number of patients that meet the definition of Influenza Like Illness (ILI), also known as flu like symptoms.

The date for the transition to all-digital television broadcasting has arrived. All stations in the Evansville market will turn off their analog transmission sometime during the day of Friday, June 12th.

State Economies Going From Bad to Worse

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. states' economies are moving from bad to worse, and their governments' fiscal stress "has accelerated," a report by an independent federal government watchdog found Monday.

"Absent any intervention or policy changes, state and local governments would face an increasing gap between receipts and expenditures in the coming years," the Government Accountability Office wrote in the report.

"Any combination of state and local government revenue increases or spending cuts to address the operating deficit is complicated by the current recession," it said.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - An unexpected improvement in U.S. home sales provided a rare dose of good economic news on Monday, but companies continued to wield the axe on jobs as the year-long recession inflicted more pain.

The pace of sales of previously owned homes rose for the first time since September and inventory declined, a bit of positive news amid a U.S. housing market crash that has chilled growth, sent unemployment soaring and sharply eroded household wealth.

Health info technology saves lives, costs: study

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Hospitals in Texas that used computers to keep track of patient records and manage care had lower rates of deaths, complications and costs, U.S. researchers said on Monday, offering a strong argument for hospitals to go "paperless."

They said patients treated in hospitals that ranked highest in use of health information technology to manage patient records and physician notes were 15 percent less likely to die compared with patients in hospitals that ranked lower.

Obama Lifts Ban on Abortion Funding

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama Friday lifted restrictions on U.S. government funding for groups that provide abortion services or counseling abroad, reversing a policy of his Republican predecessor George W. Bush, a spokesman said.

The Democratic president's decision was a victory for advocates of abortion rights on an issue that in recent years has become a tit-for-tat policy change each time the White House shifts from one party to the other.

Clinton Confirmed as Secretary of State

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Hillary Clinton won U.S. Senate approval as secretary of state Wednesday despite renewed Republican concerns about potential conflicts of interest created by her husband's foreign fundraising.

The Senate easily approved Clinton's nomination by President Barack Obama to be the top U.S. diplomat. She replaces former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

The final Senate vote was 94-2.
