A Thursday morning house fire in Evansville claimed the lives of several pets, the Evansville Fire Department said.

Firefighters with EFD responded to a home on Weinbach Avenue Thursday around 5:50 a.m. after receiving a report of a fire from a resident there.

When firefighters arrived, they saw smoke showing from the back of the house.

EFD says the fire was considered extinguished at 6:45 a.m. after extensively looking for hidden fire in walls, furniture, bedding, etc.

According to EFD, the fire originated in a basement bedroom and the occupant awoke to smoke and glow next to his bed. He went upstairs and woke up his parents who were sleeping, at which point they attempted to extinguish the fire with a fire extinguisher but were unsuccessful.

EFD says three adults and two teens were living in the home along with four dogs, six cats, and a snake. Two dogs were rescued and treated by EFD on scene, but four cats perished as a result of the fire.

None of the home's residents were injured as a result of the fire. EFD says the family will be displaced but stated they did not need Red Cross assistance at this time.

EFD says the cause of the fire was electrical but that the electrical failure remains under investigation.
