4.0 Magnitude Earthquake Reaches Into Southern Illinois

Some southern Illinois residents may have felt the shake of a 4.0 magnitude earthquake overnight.

Some residents in our Tri-State area may have felt the remnants of a 4.0 magnitude earthquake on Wednesday night.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), a 4.0 magnitude earthquake originated in southeastern Missouri around 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday night

The USGS's "ShakeMap" shows that many residents in our southern Illinois area were well within the estimated intensity area, with some residents even reporting feeling the quake to the USGS database.

The most disastrous earthquake in southern Illinois' history was a 5.4 magnitude quake that caused considerable structural damage in the 1960s.
