Afghan Evacuees Arrive in Indiana, Head to Camp Atterbury

A National Guard aircraft carrying Afghan evacuees arrived in Indiana on Thursday.

On Thursday, Sept. 2, an Ohio National Guard C-130 aircraft carrying Afghan evacuees arrived in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Soldiers with the 1st Calvary Division and Indiana National Guard greeted the Afghans, who will now begin their safe resettlement to the United States.

The troops will provide transportation, temporary housing, medical screening, and logistics support as part of Operation Allies Welcome.

The evacuees will now head to Camp Atterbury in Edinburgh, Indiana, just south of Indianapolis. The training base has been selected alongside seven other military facilities to house evacuees from Afghanistan.

According to reports, about 5,000 individuals will be housed at Camp Atterbury.

We headed out to cloudy skies and some damp conditions this morning across the Tri-State. We've been tracking scattered showers for the first part of the day. While it’s been mostly cloudy, there will be some sunshine as soon as we get the rain out of the area. Temperatures are still expected to reach unseasonably warm values this afternoon. With some sunshine and winds out of the southwest highs should have no problem reaching the upper 50s and lower 60s. Clouds will clear out, but the southerly wind flow will keep overnight lows in the low to mid 40s. Tomorrow morning won't be all that bad considering it will be December 2nd.
