UPDATE: A man and woman are now in custody after an exchange of gunfire with sheriff's deputies.

The Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office has identified Cade Kirk and Diana Ellmers as those two suspects.

Officials say two stolen vehicles were located near the Union Township River Bottoms Friday morning.

Around 7 Friday evening, there was a call for suspicious subjects near the Old Dogtown Tavern.

Officials say Ellmers fired at a deputy, striking the patrol car.

We're told two deputies and at least one officer fired at Ellmers, wounding her multiple times.

The other suspect, Kirk, told officials he had been shot and agreed to crawl out of the woods toward deputies where he surrendered and was taken to an area hospital.

The Sheriff's Office is expected to hold a news conference Sunday.

Original Story:

Deputies are searching for two suspects in south Vanderburgh County, following a shots fired call, Friday night.

According to law enforcement on the scene, a deputy was shot at by a man and a woman and returned fire. The deputy was not injured, but several bullets did hit the squad car. It is unclear if either of the suspects were hit.

The incident was reported around 7:30 pm in the 6000 block of Old Henderson Road. That is about 3 miles south of Burdette Park.

The commanding officer on scene tells 44News that this incident is tied to an earlier report of several stolen cars in the area. The Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office has been searching for the suspects in connection to that case, most of the day.

The deputy involved in the shooting spotted the suspects and attempted to take them into custody. That is when the shots were fired.

The area is currently blocked off and the Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office, Evansville Police, and the Indiana State Police are using drones and K9s to search the area. They are also going from building to building to clear the area.

A helicopter has also been called in to assist in the search.

44News has a crew on the scene and will continue to follow the situation.
