On Tuesday, Oct. 6, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear again renewed the Commonwealth's statewide mask mandate for an additional 30 days, citing the importance of mask-wearing in slowing the spread of COVID-19.

“We saw with the last escalation that we have the power to stop it if we simply do what we know works and that is wearing a mask and engaging in social distancing,” Gov. Beshear said. “If we are honest with ourselves, we know that fewer people are wearing masks right now than they were when we took steps in July on the mask mandate to stop that escalation.”

Alongside the state's mask mandate renewal on Tuesday came the report of 1,054 new positive cases of COVID-19 throughout the state. According to Gov. Beshear, the Bluegrass State is currently experiencing a significant "escalation" in the COVID-19 crisis.

“We are experiencing an escalation, our third major escalation in this COVID crisis, and it is significant,” the Governor said. “Last week we had 6,126 positive cases and we are on pace to have more than that this week.”

Masks first became mandatory throughout Kentucky on July 10, when Beshear first issued the COVID-19 executive order requiring them. Since then, the mandate has been extended by Beshear multiple times in an effort to slow the spread of the virus.
