The Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office is continuing to investigate a crash that killed two people.

The accident took place on Monday afternoon before 6 p.m. on U.S. 41 near Baseline Road in Evansville.

According to deputies, a 2018 Chevrolet Equinox was driving southbound on U.S. 41, when for unknown reasons, it crossed the median and started driving the wrong way in the northbound lanes. Soon after, it collided with a 2006 Ford F-150.

The driver of the F-150 died at the scene of the crash from injuries sustained in the accident and was later identified as 79-year-old Karl Bechtel of Newburgh. Bechtel's autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday at 1:00 p.m.

The 2018 Chevrolet Equinox driver that crossed the median was freed from the vehicle and taken to the hospital, but later died from injuries related to the crash. That driver was identified as 56-year-old Judy Pharris of Vincennes.

US 41 was closed for over three hours while deputies investigated the scene.  The crash remains under investigation by the Sheriff's Office.  Drugs or alcohol are not currently suspected as a factor in the crash.

It's a seasonable and dry start to Friday, but the heat is going to turn up this afternoon. Partly sunny skies will stick around with highs in the mid to upper 80s. The humidity may take the way it feels up a notch. Those southerly winds will help push in that moisture making it feel more like the low 90s. An isolated shower can't be ruled out, but any rainfall won't ruin our plans.
