Daviess County Emergency Management Agency Director Andy Ball says several White Flag events have been scheduled for individuals in the Daviess County, Kentucky, area who may need shelter from the cold.
Ball says that with temperatures expected to drop dangerously low on Thursday night and Saturday night, White Flag events will be held on both nights.
Additionally, White Flag criteria may also be met on Tuesday, Feb. 9, and Wednesday, Feb. 10, but Ball says those days will be confirmed at a later time as more is learned about the possibility of frigid temperatures.
Ball says that the Daniel Pitino Shelter located at 501 Walnut Street in Owensboro and St. Benedict’s shelter at 1001 W 7th St in Owensboro may not be at full capacity, so check there first. The Daniel Pitino Shelter will also be offering meals at 7:00 a.m. and at 5:30 p.m.
If capacity at those locations is exceeded, Owensboro Christian Church (OCC) at 2818 New Hartford Rd in Owensboro will be open as a warming center, offering bedding from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. OCC will only be open if the homeless shelters are at full capacity.
If a warming center is required, the following transportation options are available:
- Provided from the Daniel Pitino Shelter to Owensboro Christian Church at 6:00 P.M. each White Flag night.
- Owensboro Transit System bus route: FREE for White Flag shelters (two bus stops near Owensboro Christian Church)
- May self-transport to the warming shelter anytime 6:30 P.M. to 10:00 P.M. White Flag nights. The White Flag shelter entrance will be between OCC entrances “C” and “D” on the New Hartford Rd side.
Ball says that families, women, and/or children should contact the Daniel Pitino Shelter (270-688-9000) and men should contact St. Benedict’s (270-541-1003) to inquire if the warming center is in operation, or if there are available bed spaces within one of the existing shelters.
