With Deaconess treating its highest volume of COVID-19 patients to date in November and ICU beds nearing capacity, health officials say they're thrilled to end the harrowing year with a way to help better protect the community.

"This is really being apart of history and modern medicine. and a really exciting moment for our fight against COVID," said Dr. Brad Scheu, Internal Medicine Specialist, Deaconess. "It's just really exciting to finally have some light at the end of the tunnel and help us to get to the finish line in our fight against COVID."

Deaconess is expecting to receive around 2,000 doses of the vaccine initially, while Ascencion St. Vincent is scheduled to receive nearly 1,000 doses.

The first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine arrived in Indiana on Monday morning, with frontline healthcare workers in Fort Wayne already receiving the vaccination just after noon.
