Early Voting Kicks Off in Kentucky

Kentucky is the last of the Tri-State to begin early voting for the 2020 General Election, which will run for three weeks, the longest in-person voting period ever for Bluegrass voters.

Early in-person voting begins Tuesday in Kentucky. Voters can head out to the polls as early as 8 a.m. in many of our Western Kentucky counties.

44News caught up with the Henderson County Clerk to find out how the county is preparing for the unprecedented election season.

"We have hand sanitizer, stickers on the floor showing them where they need to stand, we have plenty of workers to help them," Clerk Renesa Abner said.

She said she knows presidential turnout is always higher than other elections but doesn't expect larger crowds do be an issue.

"There may be a little line but we do have plenty of workers to help people and just ask that people be patient, be safe," Abner said.

Voters can pick between two early voting locations in Henderson County: the Chase Fulcher Archery Center and the Henderson County Courthouse. a

Abner said with 2,000 fewer requests for mail-in ballots than during the primary election, the county is expecting to see high in-person turnout this time around.

"We have three weeks of early voting and there's no appointments and it's no excuse so you can just walk right in," she said.

Poll workers have been hard at work preparing the sites ensuring every safety protocol is in place ahead of Tuesday's start.

"The way we have everything set up and the way it's laid out and the sanitizers and all the PPE we have -- there's a lot of it -- I think it'll go smoothly." said poll worker Sydney Book.

So even during a pandemic they're confident voters will have nothing to worry about when casting their ballots.

"I think people are going to feel safe and confident about coming to places that have lots of room," Abner said.

And the Clerk's Office said the best way to ensure a safe and efficient process is for voters to review a sample ballot before they hit the polls. There's two lengthy Constitutional Amendments on the ballot, so it'll be easier for voters to read up on those ahead of time.

If you want to get an early start at the polls in Henderson County, both the courthouse on 20 N. Main St., and Chase Fulcher Archery Center, located at 377 Garden Mile Rd., will be open Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The archery center will be open Saturday as well from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Our third day in a row with very mild temperatures. Highs across the Tri-State were in the low and middle 60's. A few showers at times crossed the area. A cold front will push through the Tri-State and will cause a few strong storms, that could have strong winds and even some torrential rain. Some flash flooding is a possibility. Strong winds overnight switching from the southwest to the northwest and may gust as high as 30 mph.
