44News has learned the identity of the 9-month-old victim of a fatal shooting.

Police have identified the victim as 9-month-old Iowa Meriweather of Henderson, Kentucky, and she passed away yesterday from a single gunshot wound to the back of the head.

On Friday around 2:40 p.m., officers were called to the 3900 block of Vista Drive about a baby that had been shot. When officers arrived at the apartment, they found 9-month-old Iowa Meriweather with a gunshot wound.

The infant was immediately taken from the scene to the hospital but was pronounced dead less than an hour later.

Neighbors were stunned to hear of the tragic accident.

“It was a big shock," said Carolyn Kenney. "I couldn’t believe it, especially a baby. I was praying and hoping that baby would make it, and like I told my son, at least that baby is in heaven.”

Officers were quick to arrive at the scene on Friday and begin their investigation into this troubling accident.

“Once officers arrived, they found the 9-month-old infant that was shot," said Sargeant Nick Winsett of the Evansville Police Department. "We know of two people, two adults, that were in the house when this occurred."

One of those two men in the home at the time of the accident has been arrested.

EPD says the infant’s father, 20-year-old, Anthony Lamont Meriweather, was arrested overnight and charged with neglect of a dependent resulting in death in connection with the shooting of his 9-month-old daughter.

Evansville Police believe the father accidentally discharged the shot that fatally wounded his daughter.

Neighbors throughout the Buena Vista apartment complex were in prayer for the mother of the child.

“I cannot imagine the pain," said Kenney. "I’ve gone through a lot in my life that is bad, but it’s nothing like what she’s going through, and I’m truly sorry, and if she ever needs anything, if I can help, I will help her.”

Meriweather is currently being held at the Vanderburgh County Corrections Center on a $50,000 cash bond.

Wow!!!! It's cold!!!! After a trace of snow in Evansville and some higher amounts to the south, we're waking up to temperatures in the mid to upper teens across the Tri-State. Thankfully, road crews did a fantastic job treating the roads to keep conditions from getting slick. However, the northerly winds gusting as high as 15 to 20 mph has dropped wind chill values into the single digits and even below zero in our western communities. There won't be much of an improvement in temperatures this afternoon. With the strong northerly wind flow and dry skies our highs will only reach the mid to upper 20s. Winds will stay quite breezy keeping the wind chill factor in place through the day.
