20-year-old Evan Terhune of Evansville died on Tuesday afternoon at Deaconess Midtown, Vanderburgh County Coroner Steve Lockyear announced Wednesday.

Terhune was taken into custody by police on Saturday during an incident in the 1100 block of Loft Cove, where an accidental shooting took place.

Evansville Police responded to the 1100 block of Loft Cove on Saturday

Police were originally called to the residence on Loft Cove on a reported break-in, with the caller telling police he had just been shot.

According to the police report, an individual present at a gathering at the Loft Cove residence fired a weapon at Terhune in self-defense, but instead of shooting Terhune, accidentally struck the owner of the residence on Loft Cove, who was hosting the gathering.

One officer made contact with Terhune, who was "acting very erratic" at the scene of the incident.

Police say Terhune punched the officer in the face, requiring four stitches, and damaged a patrol car. Terhune was then tased and taken into police custody.

The Evansville Police Department says that even after being tased and taken into custody, Terhune continued to act erratically as he was transported to the hospital - yelling, screaming, and thrashing about uncontrollably in the back of the police transport van.

According to EPD, further investigation revealed that those in attendance at the gathering were "abusing various forms of narcotics," and it's believed that Terhune was under the influence of those narcotics during the time of the events.

Terhune's autopsy results are pending at this time.
