The Evansville Police Department is investigating a Sunday afternoon shooting that sent one person to the hospital.
The shooting took place around 2:30 p.m. on Sunday in the parking lot of the Dollar General store on South Weinbach Avenue near Pollack Avenue.
According to police, the shooting took place after the victim and suspect got into an argument in the parking lot. Police say the suspect pulled out a gun and chased the victim on foot through the parking lot, ultimately shooting him in the lower back.
The victim told police that he didn't know the shooter's name or why he shot him.
“The victim told officers he had no idea who the suspect was, had never seen them before, and had no idea why he shot him, and according to witnesses that was kind of the case," said Sargeant Anna gray of the Evansville Police Department.
Sgt. Gray told 44News that incidences like the one at Dollar General seem to be occurring more frequently.
“I do feel like we have seen a few more incidences where there’s a verbal dispute that turns into one person pulling a gun out and trying to resolve it that way," she said. "I don’t know where that’s coming from or what’s started that trend, but I do feel like we have seen more of those types of incidents lately.”
EPD Detectives believe they know the identity of the suspected shooter, but no arrests have been made at this time.
EPD told 44News the victim is still at the hospital but is in stable condition.
