On July 27th, Aidan Mercer and his little brother Milo were involved in a serious car accident.

“In July, I was getting ready to go to college and then next thing you know, I wake up and I’m in the ICU,” Mercer tells 44News.

The brothers were rushed to the hospital for surgery, where Milo was treated for a broken leg and later released. Aidan, however, had a much longer road to recovery.

Aidan was life-flighted to a hospital in Louisville. He was suffering from serious head trauma, a broken femur, a shattered elbow, a broken chin, and more.

“I didn’t feel like I was in the wrong place. I didn’t feel like anything bad had happened. I just kind of took it all as is,” Mercer says.

Aidan was in a medically-induced coma for a few weeks and withstood several surgeries.

In the meantime, hundreds of people, including family, friends, teammates, and strangers came to Aidan’s side to support him and his family through their recovery.

“I’m very thankful for everything. The fundraisers, the bracelets that people wear now. I mean, it’s really great to know that I’ve gotten a lot of support and love from people that I’ve never met in my life,” Aidan says.

Although there is still a lot of healing ahead, including another surgery next week, Aidan is overcoming all the odds and breaking every expectation that his doctors had for him.

“Just enjoy the little things. That is definitely what I have taken in a lot more, is just the little things. They bring me pure joy,” Aidan says.

The middle linebacker turned defensive end turns 19 on November 7th. He says he’s very excited to celebrate, but he’s more excited to see all the family he feels he almost left behind.

“I’m not going to worry about anything. Whatever happens, it’s going to happen and I can handle it just fine,” Aidan says.

The passage of an overnight cold front will bring another shot of unseasonal cool air. Northwest winds will give way to raw conditions with windchills holding in the 30s through most of the day. Expect highs to top in the upper-40s under clear skies.
