A Madisonville man is in jail Sunday morning on an attempted murder charge.

Madisonville Police say they responded to the 900 Block of Mae Von Drive in reference to a medical emergency shortly after 2 a.m.

MPD says 31-year-old Nathaniel Spears attacked the victim in her sleep. We're told Spears straddled the victim on her bed and was holding a knife.

Authorities say during the altercation, the victim was able to fight the knife away from Spears, but that he continued to assault her.

Police say the victim has extreme swelling to her left eye and pain in her hand. She was taken to Baptist Health to be treated for her injuries.

Spears is booked in the Hopkins County Jail for attempted murder and strangulation in the 2nd degree.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.

It was an absolutely gorgeous afternoon throughout the Tri-State, but despite our seemingly endless supply of sunshine today, temperatures remained more than 10° cooler than the norm for this time of the year. Fortunately, today's peak temperature of 65° represents our coolest anticipated afternoon high temperature through the remainder of our extended forecast. While it is indeed encouraging that temperatures will gradually rise through the rest of the work week into the weekend ahead, we'll still have to deal with temperatures back down into the upper 30s and low 40s early Thursday morning.
