Hypothermia Concerns During Dangerous Temperatures

Overnight, the temperatures will once again dip into the single digits, causing concern people might get hypothermia. If your body temperature gets below 95, it is considered a medical emergency, and you will want to seek medical help to try to prevent any further tissue damage.

"I've lived in Evansville my whole life and I've not seen it like this in a very long time,” said Evansville resident Amira Morgan.

It’s been a while since Evansville has seen this much snow.

And those bracing the elements are trying to be prepared.

"I am bundled up -- I have a lot of layers on underneath this,” Morgan said during the afternoon of Feb. 16th in downtown Evansville. “Just going out for a quick coffee -- hopefully -- won’t be out too long -- but I know with the snow it's dangerous -- you can slide -- you can slip."

Another danger we might forget about -- hypothermia.

"It's a decrease in body temperature -- and so if the body temperature below before 95 -- it's considered a medical emergency,” said. Dr. Phillip Adams, medical director for Deaconess Midtown. “And that's the case when we would want you to come in and be seen."

Now of course one of the biggest concerns is if you aren't properly dressed -- that hypothermia could potentially turn into frostbite.

"And you end up developing tissue -- injury -- that's when it becomes frost-bite," Dr. Adams said. "And so -- that typically starts off as red and painful skin that eventually becomes more like numbness and starts to turn white and becomes hard or waxy."

Hospitals are also seeing more people come in due to snow related injuries.

And doctors say if you have a heart condition or are not physically fit, try to find someone else to shovel your snow.
