Indiana lawmakers passed a bill this spring that will up the penalty for Catalytic Converter Thefts.
There is an ongoing problem in the Tri-State with thieves cutting the part from the underside of vehicles.
According to law enforcement, the parts are sold for the rare metals they are made of.
But a new bill signed into law by Governor Holcomb aims to deter both thieves and the people purchasing the parts.
The crime has been elevated to a Level 6 Felony, which in Indiana could mean as much as two years in prison and a $10,000 fine if convicted.
