Basketball season was set to begin next week in the Bluegrass state, but due to the state of Kentucky being hit hard by COVID-19, the Winter sports season in the Commonwealth will look different.
On Tuesday's KHSAA Board of Control meeting, members voted to delay the start of all Winter sports until after the New Year.
The new plan for basketball is as follows:
January 4th -- Regular season starts
March 1st -- District Tournaments begin
March 8th -- Regional Tournaments begin
March 17th-21st / March 24th-28th -- Sweet 16 (tentatively scheduled)
All other winter sports, including swimming, wrestling, etc, will also begin competition on January 4th.
In regards to finishing football season, KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett remained optimistic. "We feel good about the continuation of the football playoffs. Number one, it is outdoors."
Tackett said that if a team does withdraw from the playoffs in the semifinals or finals, the team they defeated in the previous round will replace them. Tackett also says state football finals would be limited to around 7,000 fans in the lower bowl of UK's Kroger Field, in order to allow proper social distancing.
