Jockeys, ponies, and horse racing fans are back for a season unlike any other at Ellis Park.
Though seating remained limited because of the pandemic, the gates remained open at Ellis Park last year. But, this season, racing and gaming are back in full swing and the purses are bigger than ever.
Over 2,000 racing fans filled the stands to kick off the 2021 racing season on Sunday.
The stables are just as full as the grandstands, setting this season up for an incredible comeback year.
“We actually have a waiting list for jockeys and trainers to come in and we have some of the most well known trainers here this year. That's, I mean, that's really exciting to have that kind of talent here in Henderson, Kentucky,” Ellis Park Marketing Manager Alison Nicholson told 44News.
This Sunday included 8 opening day races that attracted fans from all over.
Greg Wauford is from Nashville and has been coming to Ellis Park since he was 12-years-old. On opening day he said, “Gambling and horse racing. If God made anything better, he'd have kept it for himself.”
The 27th was just the start of a 31-date racing season at Ellis Park. Nicholson says, “Every week is something new and something fun and exciting. Our goal is really to make this like a one-stop entertainment destination.”
After opening day the park will take 3 days off before filling back up for 4th of July weekend races.
