To say Saturday's come back win was a wild one for Mt. Vernon would be an understatement. The team was down 2-0 and on the brink of elimination against Memorial, but the Wildcats were not leaving.
"I told them I believe that we could still comeback and do this but it was going to take all 6, every single play and between that break between the second and third set, something clicked with them and they just came out on all cylinders that third set and there was no stopping them after that," said Mt. Vernon Head Volleyball Coach Megan Devault
"It's just a statement for this team because we're a tough team and we fight until the end basically and that showed everybody that we're not going to give up and we're still not going to give up going into regionals. It meant a lot winning Saturday," said Mt. Vernon Senior OH Brooke Jackson.
For a team that has 7 seniors, this sectional championship is a little sweeter given how long they have been trying to win one.
"We all have been playing together since we were little and so it was just a great feeling to be able to finish with a sectional win but we're not done yet so we're already looking forward to the regional game," said Mt. Vernon Senior OH Libby Steinhart.
"We've been trying to get this for four years straight now and finally our senior year all of our hard work payed off and through the Coronavirus and everything going on we were super nervous, super stressed that we would even have a season and for us to just come out and really just win sectionals finally in our last year it was crazy. It was so fun and we've been looking forward to it for a long time," said Jackson
Mt. Vernon will open regionals against Vincennes Lincoln, and the Wildcats believe they can continue their strong postseason play.
"We're excited to go up and play Vincennes, we've played them in the past and they're a good team but we should be able to come out strong and beat them," said Jackson
"We want to keep going from here. It's great to have a sectional win but that's not where we stop and we want to keep going and hopefully get this regional win as well. That's the plan," said Steinhart.
