15-year-old Megan Nichols was taken from her home, sexually abused, strangled then suffocated, police say 24-year-old Brodey Murbarger of Evansville is the man responsible for her death in July 2014.

"I live about four houses away from the family, these are really good people, as you can expect they have been totally devastated" says long time neighbor and Pastor Tim Sullivan.

A number of law enforcement agencies have been working the case the last six years, including the FBI, Illinois State Police, Fairfield Police Department, Wayne County Sheriff's Office, Evansville Police, Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office and Indiana State Police.

The 15-year-old suddenly went missing from her Fairfield, Illinois home, July 3, 2014.

"I think its great that they locked someone up, that deserved to be locked up, and got someone off the street that needed to be off the street so he cant hurt anyone else" says Fairfield resident Ginger Rumsey.

Nichols was considered a missing person until Dec. 2017 when human remains were found on a farm in rural Wayne County, just five miles from her home.

Those remains were later identified by crime scene investigators as the 15-year-old girl.

"I don't think Megan deserved this, nobody deserves to die" adds Fairfield resident Richard Reid.

According to court records Murbarger, met Nichols online.

Court records say the man could be an Internet predator, its unclear if there could be other victims.

"You're going to get what you deserve, you can rest assure that justice will be served" says Reid.

Sept. 25, 2020, a Wayne County grand jury indicted Murbarger on three (3) felony first degree murder charges, 1. Suffocation 2. Strangulation 3. Manner and Means Unknown, one count of Criminal Home Invasion, one count of Criminal Confinement of a Body and one count, Sexual Abuse of a Minor.

"This is a good family, they need this to help them continue the healing process, they will never be totally healed" adds Sullivan.

Murbarger was arrested outside of his workplace in Evansville early Wednesday morning.

It is still unclear as to what evidence led police and special agents to the 24-year-old man.

Authorities executed a search warrant at the suspect's apartment located at 5037 Lakeside Court, inside the Lakeside Apartment complex.

"My heart goes out to her mom. I wish them all the best, finally justice will be served and they can put this all behind them" says Rumsey.

Murbarger is being held in the Vanderburgh County Jail without bond, awaiting extradition to Wayne County where he will face a judge on his charges.
