A new scam call is circulating in the Owensboro, Kentucky area, and the local police department is asking area residents to be stay alert.
According to the Owensboro Police Department, many citizens have received fraudulent phone calls over the last few days from individuals claiming to be officers or detectives from OPD.
OPD says that in these calls, the scammer requests the victim to make a payment to either pay a fine or prevent being arrested.
The police department says that this is a total scam and that OPD will never contact the public requesting a payment.
"If you receive this type of call do not provide any personal information and hang up before calling our department directly at 270-687-8888 to report it," OPD said in a statement Friday.
OPD says its fraud detectives are currently investigating the calls that have been reported but issued the warning Friday in an effort to prevent any additional citizens from falling victim to the scam.
