Owensboro Public Schools has named its first-ever Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

OPS Superintendent Dr. Matthew Constant named Newton Parrish Elementary School assistant principal David Phillips to the position.

Phillips new responsibilities will include coordinating and overseeting the District's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion plan.  The plan will provide steps to further promote a culture of equality for all members of the OPS community.

"The creating of this position was one of the priorities of Dr. Constant and his vision with the Equity Task Force," Phillips said in a statement.

"I have gotten to know so many families in our district throughout my career with OPS and I look forward to continuing to build those relationships and hopefully create a pipeline of former students returning to work and teach in our district in the future."

Phillips will start the role on July 1st but remains part of the district's Equity Task Force.

It's a seasonable and dry start to Friday, but the heat is going to turn up this afternoon. Partly sunny skies will stick around with highs in the mid to upper 80s. The humidity may take the way it feels up a notch. Those southerly winds will help push in that moisture making it feel more like the low 90s. An isolated shower can't be ruled out, but any rainfall won't ruin our plans.
