A pedestrian was taken to the hospital in Vanderburgh County on Friday morning after the sheriff's office says they were hit by a car on Waterworks Road just west of Highway 41.

The Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office received the initial call about the pedestrian around 1:00 a.m. on Friday. The caller said there was an individual walking in the middle of the roadway on Waterworks Road just west of Highway 41.

The driver who called 911 said the area was not well lit and that the pedestrian was wearing dark clothes. They said they had to swerve in order to avoid hitting the individual walking on the road.

Before deputies could find the pedestrian, another driver called 911 about 10 minutes after the first call and said that he had struck someone walking in the middle of the road while traveling east on Waterworks Road.

Deputies say they found the pedestrian in a field about 10 feet off the road, unconscious and having difficulty breathing. The sheriff's office says the pedestrian was taken to the hospital with serious injuries but that they're expected to survive.

Due to the injuries of the pedestrian, VCSO says the driver had to submit to a blood draw, though drugs and alcohol don't appear to be a factor.

The incident remains under investigation.

We woke up to dry and cold conditions this Tuesday morning. Unfortunately, there won’t be any drastic changes this afternoon. Increasing cloud cover will be likely as a cold northerly flow continues ushering in chilly air. Highs won’t be going very far, we’ll likely only reach the mid to upper 30s Tri-State wide. We’re tracking a little bit of winter weather out to our north and west. Skies will be mostly cloudy tonight with a chance of flurries/light rain. It won't be a big snow by any stretch, but you could see some flurries flying Tuesday night into Wednesday morning around the Tri-State. Don't expect more than a dusting, with greater chances falling north of I-64.
