You better hope Pappy Van Winkle is not on your loved one's Christmas List! Kentucky is home to some of the most coveted bourbon in the world and perhaps one of the most desired is Pappy Van Winkle. The liquor named after its creator has its own exhibit at the Frazier History Museum in Louisville.
Pappy opened the distillery on Derby Day in 1935 with a bourbon made of wheat instead of rye. In 1997, the Beverage Testing Institute in Chicago gave it a 99 out of 100 the highest rating ever given to a bourbon whiskey.
The bottles are so hard to come by some call them unicorns, "Supposedly they're out there but most people don't seem 'em," said bourbon enthusiast Nate Hill. Some stores have even started a lottery system to doll out the few bottles they can get their hands on. If Pappy Van Winkle is on your Christmas List, get ready to dole out some dollars bottles of the bourbon cost thousands of dollars and that's if you can find one!
