Rain and Cold Arrive for Thanksgiving

A big cooldown will accompany Turkey Day.

The combination of sunshine and strong southerly winds helped drive temperatures to their highest point since last Wednesday. Our blustery midweek allowed for an afternoon high temperature of 60° In Evansville earlier on. The breezy southerly winds will linger throughout the evening ahead and only allow temperatures to fall from 51° around dinnertime to 48° by 10 o’clock. In fact, that 48° temperature at 10 PM will likely represent our coolest temperature of the evening and overnight hours. We'll actually see temperatures gradually climb to the 50° mark around daybreak.

Despite the gradual rise in temperature early Thanksgiving morning, rainfall will make itself at home well before any of your guests do on Thanksgiving. An advancing cold front will usher rain chances into the westernmost reaches of the Tri-State as early as 2 or 3 o’clock in the morning; from there, it's expected that the rain will reach Evansville between 4 and 5 AM. The latest model data indicates that the organized rain will continue to roll up the Ohio Valley through at least 10 AM or so; it is possible that isolated showers will hold on in some spots through 2 PM. By the time it’s all said and done, some of us could see upwards of 0.50" or rainfall. As the rain departs, the mercury will quickly begin to fall - that passing cold front will allow how much cooler air mass to settle in across the Tri-State just in time for Black Friday.

If you’re planning on taking advantage of those Black Friday deals well before sunrise, just be sure to bundle up. Temperatures will gradually fall from 30° around midnight under clear skies to just 24° by 6 AM; windchill values could fall into the mid-teens at times that morning. It'd be nice to nab a particularly warm winter jacket at one of those big box stores. Once the sun rises however, temperatures will begin to rise as well - we'll see an afternoon high temperature of just 41° under crystal clear skies later that day. As for Shop Small Saturday, conditions appear to be far more favorable; expect a temperature that day of 53° and partly cloudy skies.

The passage of an overnight cold front will bring another shot of unseasonal cool air. Northwest winds will give way to raw conditions with windchills holding in the 30s through most of the day. Expect highs to top in the upper-40s under clear skies.
