A suspect was taken into custody after fleeing Evansville Police during an early morning pursuit Thursday.

We’re told officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a red Volkswagen Jetta. The vehicle was driven by 62-year-old Patrick Blackwell of Evansville.

Blackwell refused to stop and sped away before crashing into a fire hydrant and knocking over a street sign on the corner of Shanklin and Grove Street.

Deputies say during the course of the pursuit, Blackwell threw a handgun out of the window. The gun was recovered by officers near the Maryland Street bridge. Suspected narcotics were also found. Officials say the handgun was loaded.

We’re told Blackwell pulled into an apartment complex parking lot where a passenger in the vehicle jumped out while the car was still moving. Officials say the passenger was trying to escape the vehicle to not be involved in the pursuit.

The passenger was injured when they jumped from the vehicle and is being treated at an area hospital. We’re told the passenger is not facing any formal charges at this time.

Blackwell was taken to the Vanderburgh County Jail without force after the crash. He is facing several charges that involve the pursuit, the handgun, and the passenger.
