A Thursday evening traffic stop just south of Providence, Kentucky, resulted in the seizure of a large number of suspected fentanyl-laced pills that police believe were going to be distributed in and around the area.

The incident began when Providence Police Department (PPD) Officers stopped a drug trafficking suspect on Highway 293 about a mile south of Providence.

Police say 20-year-old Curtis Mitchell of Hanson, who had outstanding felony warrants out of Hopkins County for receiving stolen property, was a passenger in the car.

Mitchell was placed under arrest for the warrants and a search was conducted.

Officers say that during their search, they found a book that contained a hidden safe with a loaded semi-automatic pistol inside the passenger compartment with Mitchell.

Police say that after being placed into handcuffs, Mitchell also tried to destroy around 250 pills that he had hidden on his person.

PPD determined the pills to be Oxycodone, and say that officers received information that they were laced with fentanyl. Police believe the pills were purchased in Madisonville for distribution in and around the Providence area.

Mitchell was arrested and lodged in the Webster County Jail on the following charges:

  • Warrant for Receiving Stolen Property Under $10,000
  • Trafficking in Controlled Substance, 1st Degree, 1st Offense (Firearm Enhancement)
  • Tampering With Physical Evidence

Two other occupants inside the vehicle at the time of the traffic stop haven't been charged in the incident at this time.

PPD says positive identification of the laced pills will be conducted by the Kentucky State Police Crime Lab.

The case remains under investigation.

The combination of sunshine and southerly winds will make for another abnormally mild day throughout the Ohio Valley - expect an afternoon high temperature near 69° this afternoon. Friday evening looks as though it will be just as pleasant; after seeing the upper 60s earlier in the day, we'll dip to 60° by 5 PM before falling towards 54° around 7 o’clock. We are however, watching a passing low pressure system and accompanying cold front that is expected to pass through the Tri-State late Friday evening and early Saturday morning.
