USI Students Respond to Possible Covid-19 Vaccine Mandate

Students and staff at the University of Southern Indiana may be mandated to roll up their sleeves for a Covid-19 vaccine by Dec. 8th.

You will likely see more vaccine clinics in the coming weeks, with the federal vaccination mandate looming.

According to an email USI president Dr. Ronald Rochon sent out on Thursday, students and faculty may be mandated to by fully vaccinated against Covid-19 by December 8th.

President Joe Biden announced several Covid-19 vaccine mandates for federal employees in September.

Because USI registers as a federal contractor, they may fall under this umbrella.

President Rochon says because they have not yet received formal guidance from the Biden administration, they want to be preemptive and extra communicative with those who live and work on campus about what could be required of them.

Two unvaccinated sophomores say they will have no issue getting their Covid-19 shots in order to stay on campus.

"Later on, I'm going to have to get it to go in a health field," said Garrett Lindsey, who just got hired on as a lifeguard at the aquatic center on campus. "I mean one way or another I'm going to have to go it. So why not just go ahead?"

"I want to go to college and if I have to get it, I have to get it," USI sophomore Sam Weinzapfel said.

The timeline of the mandate is ambiguous though, with students and faculty needing to get a first Covid-19 shot by the last week of October if they are to be fully vaccinated by that Dec. 8th date.

The issue is it still is not a requirement yet.

"I don't know how they're going to enforce that," Weinzapfel said. "Because if you don't get it by December 8th are they going to keep you from taking finals?"

Deaconess operates the Covid-19 vaccine clinic on campus. They say a lot of the USI faculty and staff got vaccinated early and now they see an average flow of traffic on Tuesdays and Thursdays when appointments are available, but expects those to increase if the mandate does go into effect.

The passage of an overnight cold front will bring another shot of unseasonal cool air. Northwest winds will give way to raw conditions with windchills holding in the 30s through most of the day. Expect highs to top in the upper-40s under clear skies.
