The Union County Public Schools (UCPS) district is joining the growing list of districts that says masks won't be required when students and staff members return to the classroom for the 2021-2022 school year.

A reopening plan released on Tuesday by the district says that face masks will be optional for students and staff, regardless of vaccination status.

The district says it plans to begin the new school year on Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2021, with students attending classes in person five days a week.

Other safeguards will be in place for the start of the school year, including three feet of social distancing when possible, hand sanitizer placed throughout school buildings, and daily health assessments.

It's a seasonable and dry start to Friday, but the heat is going to turn up this afternoon. Partly sunny skies will stick around with highs in the mid to upper 80s. The humidity may take the way it feels up a notch. Those southerly winds will help push in that moisture making it feel more like the low 90s. An isolated shower can't be ruled out, but any rainfall won't ruin our plans.
