Rockport Elementary School in Rockport, IN moved from in-person to virtual learning on Tuesday.
The decision comes as over 40 percent of staff members were out this week with Covid and other illnesses. A large number of students was out sick or in quarantine as well.
As the situation worsens in the area, the South Spencer School Corporation has implemented a new mask policy. All students, staff and vistors at any of the 4 schools in the district must be masked up.
The only times masks can be taken off are for eating and drinking or if there is room to socially distance.
South Spencer Superintendent Dr. Richard Rutherford tells 44News that the district will evaluate Rockport Elementary's situation on Friday. From there, they will make a decision on when students can return to the classroom.
The district will also look at Covid numbers on a weekly basis to decide when mask mandates can change.
