Music and the smell of great food is filling the streets in Downtown Henderson for the 2021 WC Handy Blues & Barbecue Festival.
The festival kicked off Wednesday, June 16th, with local favorites Blues 4U opening the show and setting the stage for several more musical performances throughout the next few days.
WC Handy Blues & Barbecue Fest has become one of the largest free music festivals in the nation and pays homage to the life and legacy of Henderson’s own “Father of the Blues” William Christopher Handy.
Wednesday saw the acts of Blues 4U, Kara Grainger, Ghost Town Blues Band, and Christone “Kingfish” Ingram.
Thursday is the festival’s Zydeco night with performances by Dwayne Dopsie & the Zydeco Hellraisers and Chubby Carrier & the Bayou Swamp Band. Those acts begin at 5:30pm in Audubon Mill Park.
Music will continue through Friday and Saturday with more information, including a full lineup available on the festival’s website, www.handyblues.org.
Of course, food will be for sale as food trucks line the street with barbeque, burgers, and more.
Festival crew members say there is a lot to look forward to.
“We know people are excited to get out and do something like this and we know everybody’s going to have a great time. Even the workers and crew members have a great time. We’re just excited to do something like this for our community,” says long-time WC Handy Blues and Barbecue Festival crew member Debbie Wedding.
