Sheriff Doug Maier of the White County Sheriff's Department said he'd be officially retired as sheriff as of March 1, 2021.
Maier made the announcement with "mixed emotions" on Tuesday, calling his time as sheriff an honor and a privilege.
For the last 18 years, Maier has served as White County Sheriff and before that, as a deputy for 21 years.
"I am extremely proud of my Sheriff's Department and the people who work beside me," said Sheriff Maier on Tuesday. "I have been very fortunate to have served alongside them, and owe a great debt of gratitude."
After saying his thanks, Sheriff Maier shared his desire to spend more time with his wife, children, and granddaughter during his retirement.
