A woman who was arrested in connection to a gruesome rape-murder investigation was formally charged with multiple felonies during her initial hearing in court on Tuesday.

36-year-old Heidi Carter was charged with one count of Aiding, Inducing, or Causing Murder, one count of Murder, one count of Aiding, Inducing, or Causing Rape, three counts of Criminal Confinement, and one count of Carrying a Handgun Without a License.

Carter's charges stem from a scenario that unfolded at a home on Stinson Avenue in Evansville on the night of Oct. 19.

Authorities were originally sent to the Stinson Avenue home after someone reportedly saw a body there. When officers got to the home, they said they found Carter standing outside with a gun.

Police said Carter's boyfriend, 46-year-old Carey Hammond, came outside with what appeared to be a weapon. He was fatally shot by officers in what authorities called a "suicided-by-cop situation."

Authorities believe that Hammond raped a woman and strangled a man to death inside the home and that Carter helped him.

Carter appeared in court on Tuesday via Zoom call, where she entered a preliminary plea of not guilty.

She remains held in the Vanderburgh County Jail on no bond, awaiting her next court appearance on Tuesday, Dec. 7, at 9:00 a.m.
