Mesker Park Zoo's New Penguin Exhibit Now Open to the Public

  • 0

After several years spent planning and constructing a $6.1 Million exhibit, the wait is finally over. And these are not your average Happy Feet penguins, there are the Humboldt "Penguins of Patagonia"

The new exhibit officially opened to the public at Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden Wednesday morning. "Amazonia" was the last exhibit of this magnitude to open in 2008.

"I think there has been a lot of buzz about penguins coming to Mesker Park Zoo, a lot of anticipation, every day we get asked, 'when is it opening, when is it opening?!' - The wait is finally over, the penguins are here, we'll be open 365 days a year and you can come out anytime to see them," says Executive Director Erik Beck.

The grand opening brought many excited guests through the gates Wednesday morning. 44News spoke with students on a field trip, who say this was their first time seeing a penguin in person.

"We're going to see the penguins. I haven't seen them, but I think they look like white big things," says 3rd grader, Rina Martin.

Zoo-goers can meet these tuxedo-wearing penguins 365 days a year.
