Public Asked to Comment on Potential CenterPoint Energy Rate Increase

  • 0

A public hearing is set for Wednesday, Oct. 13, on a potential rate increase for CenterPoint Energy customers.

The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC) will accept feedback from the public on the potential rate increase, which could add approximately $23 a month to a typical residential customer's bill.

As the Indiana Office of Utility Consumer Counselor (IOUCC) explains, the rate increase was proposed to cover the cost of a large project being looked at by CenterPoint Energy.

The project is a new electric generation facility in Posey County that would include two natural gas-fired turbines and cost approximately $323 million.

CenterPoint Energy is also looking to build a facility on the Ohio River to store, load, and transport dry ash from its coal-fired generating facility - a project with an estimated cost of $12 million. New ponds at the Brown and Culley generation facilities to store wastewater and coal-pile runoff are also being discussed at a cost of about $19 million.

The utility states in testimony that the ponds and dry ash storage and transportation facility are needed for compliance with the US EPA’s coal combustion residuals rule, according to IOUCC.

The IURC's public field hearing on CenterPoint Energy's request is set for Wednesday, Oct. 13, at the Old National Events Plaza in Evansville, Indiana.

The hearing will begin at 6:00 p.m. CT in the Locust Room. CenterPoint Energy customers are encouraged to arrive by 5:45 p.m. for an overview of field hearing procedures and the rate case process.

The OUCC is also inviting written comments from CenterPoint Energy customers.

Written comments can be made via the OUCC’s website at www.in.gov/oucc/2361.htm, by email at uccinfo@oucc.IN.gov, or by mail at:
